Step 1 Three Key Areas Of Performance

PROFILE OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE PEOPLE

Your effectiveness at work or even for job search itself depends on your strengths in three key areas that we will be discussing in more detail on this website. Once you understand the significance and role of each of these areas, you’ll know which levers to push to get your effectiveness up. There are many highly talented job seekers that we meet who have weak networking skills – this is an area that can be fixed with Internet tools. Job seekers are amazed that it never occurred to them to view the three distinct aspects to achieving effectiveness.

a. “Structural Capital” - designates unique knowledge and skills (“intellectual property”) that you possess, your discipline, habits, systems, practices and processes. In the section on structural capital we’ll provide you detailed tips, for instance, on how to restructure your resume and cover letters to generate the maximum initial impact. We’ll also describe additional documents that you may wish to create to support your job search. Most importantly, we’ll coach you through these documents on how to become relentless in the pursuit of your goals – methodically doing all of the things necessary for your success. Discipline, focus and adherence to a system that works for you will be far more important than who you know or even your skills. We’ll show you methods that have worked for our graduates. b. “Relationship Capital” - designates your ability to network, dialog and build relationships based on trust, integrity and commitment. We’ll show you how to build networking relationships and an online presence, leverage web 2.0, and make yourself known so that jobs chase you. c. “Human Capital” – your knowledge, skills, abilities and attitudes (collectively known as ‘competencies’). Here we will indicate the set of competencies that are assessed most frequently in interviews, and also some of the emerging competencies. Brush up on them, or invest in resources to acquire deep knowledge in them so you can be competitive in the marketplace. Think of these as the three legs of a stool. If one of the legs is shorter or longer than the others, it makes for an unstable stool – so too with your performance, if your in imbalance with respect to your ‘capital’ in one of these categories. We need to strive for a healthy balance of the three skill areas.

Below we will guide you on the 4-step process to assess your goals, prepare an appropriate set of documents to support your interviews, increase your network, brush up on vital skills and knowledge, to role play and test your interviews, and be fully confident when you walk into the interview. Remember the words of John Wayne:

Courage is being scared to death… and saddling up anyway. — John Wayne
